Laser cutting, how does it work?

In this article, we will discuss how laser cutting works, as well as its different types and some of the most important advantages of this cutting system.

The first laser cutting machine was used in 1965, with the aim of drilling holes in diamond dies. However, today, there are many applications with this type of cutting and it can be used with various materials.

What is laser cutting?

We define laser cutting as a technique whose objective is the cutting of sheet metal parts, characterized in that its main source of energy is a laser that concentrates its light on the work surface on which we decide to work.

In order for us to remove the cut material, it is necessary to supply a pressurized gas, such as nitrogen, oxygen or argon.

When applying laser cutting in the manufacture of parts, one of its main advantages is that we do not need to have cutting dies and we can execute silhouette adjustments.

How does laser cutting work?

Below, we briefly explain how laser cutting works:

There are mirrors mounted on each of the ends of the container, one of them being “special”, since it is not completely transparent.

By means of electrical energy, the gas inside the tube is activated. This energy is produced by a radio frequency unit, emitting energy in the form of light.

One of the parts of this light (the one that is most intense) exits through the partially transparent mirror, thus forming the laser beam. On the other hand, the other part of the light returns backwards bounced, increasing its intensity.

If we perform laser cutting with mechanized equipment, the cuts offer us highly reproducible results with extremely narrow groove widths, practically zero distortion and the areas that can be affected by heat are minimized.

Types of laser cutting services

TRULASER 5030 and Tecoi LS Disk 6030 sheet metal laser cutting

This type of laser cutting is highly suitable for cutting thin sheet metal parts and small dimensions.

The TRUMPF CO² laser cutting technology allows us to achieve great flexibility and productivity.

The cuts are of extreme quality, even if they are very small contours and perforations in stainless steel, carbon steel and aluminum sheet.

At Oxiplant, we have 5 machines that incorporate a laser marking system and some are equipped with a beveling head to make chamfers, both inside and outside, on curved and straight parts.

Large dimension sheet metal laser cutting

We offer our clients excellent precision and cutting finish at competitive prices, thanks to the latest solid state laser cutting technology “YAG” from TRUMPF.

Tube laser

We have the TRUMPF TUBEMATIC machinery, which is specially designed for the fully automatic machining of tubes and profiles, offering great versatility where complex contours and notches can be obtained, in round or square tubes.

Among its main characteristics, we highlight the cutting of high-quality tubes, both in stainless steel and in carbon steel.
